Koki Sugawara is a 26-year-old Japanese international who primarily plays as a right-back. He offers tactical flexibility, having also been deployed in more advanced wing roles and even as a central defender. Sugawara was part of Japan's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup held across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Southampton initially signed him from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar for a fee of €7 million in the summer of 2024.
His first season with the Saints saw limited action, contributing one goal and one assist across 35 appearances. He spent the entire 2024-25 campaign on loan at German Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen. There, he became a regular starter, making 31 competitive appearances and providing six assists from the flank.
