Southampton FC's Saints Foundation has been awarded nearly £500,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund to enhance its Senior Saints programme. This initiative aims to reduce loneliness among older residents in Southampton while promoting physical activity and social connection. The funding will support four community hubs in areas where older adults face significant health inequalities, providing accessible spaces for daily activities and health support. The need for such programs is evident, as nearly one in five older adults in Southampton report feelings of loneliness. Last season, the Senior Saints programme successfully engaged over 450 participants, with 80% reporting improved well-being. Jean, a participant, shared how the programme helped her regain confidence and enjoy physical activity again after experiencing isolation. Paul Hedges, Health Projects Manager for Saints Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for the funding, emphasizing its importance in fostering friendships and support for older people in Southampton. The grant will enable the continuation of weekly sessions, including chair-based exercises and walking football, making a significant impact on the community's health and happiness.
