The scoring began early for Tonda Eckert's side when Taylor Harwood-Bellis powered Welington's cross into the net with a header after just 12 minutes. Fellow attacker Ross Stewart then doubled Southampton's lead in the second half, showcasing smart footwork before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

Preston North End, managed by Paul Heckingbottom, managed to pull a goal back through Lewis Dobbin. The opportunity arose after Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz slipped while attempting to clear a long ball, leaving Dobbin with an open net to score.

However, Southampton quickly reasserted their dominance. Substitute Cyle Larin wrapped up the three points for the visitors in injury time, converting Sam Edozie's cross from close range to ensure the Saints' victory and solidify their play-off position.
