Southampton are awaiting the verdict of a Football Association disciplinary hearing on a misconduct charge against head coach Tonda Eckert, a decision that could trigger a further managerial change at St Mary's. The German coach's hearing took place on Thursday, with the club hoping for a swift outcome as they sit 13th in the Championship on 10 points after eight games.

Chief executive Phil Parsons has publicly appealed for leniency, pointing to the severe sanctions the club has already faced. Southampton were expelled from last season's play-offs and deducted four points by the EFL before this campaign began after admitting to spying on Championship rivals Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough. The club also received a significant fine.

Parsons appeals for leniency

Parsons argued that these punishments should be considered by the FA's disciplinary commission. "What we hope as a club is they actually recognise where we are at the moment, and what we've already been through, because I think it has to be taken into account," he said. He described the cumulative impact as one of the largest sanctions in sporting history. "I really feel like we've taken enough. We've been hurt," Parsons added. The CEO also confirmed the club has submitted character references for Eckert to the commission.

The club's recent form has been mixed, with their last five results reading two wins, two draws and a defeat. They return to action on October 11 at home to local rivals Portsmouth, who are 19th in the table. Assistant coach Mikey Harris is currently taking first-team training in Eckert's absence.

Edwards a potential target

Should Eckert receive a lengthy ban, Southampton have identified Rob Edwards as a potential replacement. The 42-year-old former Wales international was sacked by Wolves in June following their relegation from the Premier League and has previously managed Luton Town and Middlesbrough. The club is understood to have held a long-standing interest in the former Wolves boss. Edwards is currently out of work and would be available to start immediately.

The situation leaves Southampton in a state of uncertainty as they prepare for a key period. The team's top scorer this season is Cyle Larin with seven goals, and they will need stability ahead of the derby with Portsmouth next month. For the latest squad information, visit our squad page.
