James Bree's first-half strike secured a vital 1-0 south coast derby win for Southampton over Portsmouth at St Mary's. The victory, their first at home in this fixture for over 21 years, was achieved despite playing the entire second half with ten men after Cameron Bragg's dismissal.
Bree found the net in the 20th minute, finishing a move created by Finn Azaz to give Saints an early lead they would fiercely protect. The game's complexion shifted dramatically just before the break when Bragg, booked earlier, received a second yellow card for a foul on Terry Devlin.
Saints stand firm
Portsmouth, with a man advantage, pressed in the second half but found Southampton's defence and goalkeeper Daniel Peretz in resilient form. The visitors managed 16 shots but only three were on target, with Peretz making three saves to preserve the clean sheet. It was Southampton's first league shutout of the season.
Portsmouth defender Regan Poole expressed his side's frustration. "I'm so disappointed, there was such an opportunity there," he said. "We got into so many good areas, we huffed and we puffed but really speaking did we have enough quality to put the ball in the back?"
The result lifts Southampton to 11th in the Championship table with 13 points from nine games. It also provides a significant boost ahead of a quick turnaround, with a trip to face Norwich City at Carrow Road on Wednesday night.
Head coach Tonda Eckert made two changes to his starting line-up, which included top scorer Cyle Larin. The team's current standings position reflects a solid start to the campaign.
Southampton's next challenge is an away match against 18th-placed Norwich on October 14.
