Tonda Eckert will continue as Southampton manager after the Football Association handed him a six-week suspended ban and a £28,000 fine for his role in last season's spygate scandal. The FA Regulatory Commission's decision, announced on 7th October 2026, concludes a lengthy disciplinary process that had cast uncertainty over the 33-year-old's future at St Mary's.

The FA sanctions

Eckert attended a hearing at the start of the October international break and accepted full responsibility for authorising the spying on opponents' training sessions towards the end of the 2025-26 campaign. The suspended ban will remain in place until the end of the 2027-28 season and will only be activated if he breaches rules on spying again. In addition to the fine, he received a formal reprimand.

Club owner Dragan Solak expressed relief that the independent panel had reached a conclusion. "I’m pleased that the independent panel has come to a decision and that we have an outcome," Solak said. "We have already suffered enough, and we appreciate the panel’s recognition of that." He was critical of the EFL's handling of the matter, stating the club would not forget how they were treated. The EFL's own independent commission had ruled in May that Eckert 'specifically authorised' the breaches, leading to a four-point deduction for Southampton this Championship season.

Moving forward

Solak described Eckert as "one of Europe's most exciting young coaches" and believes the suspended sentence allows him to focus on the team's campaign. The club confirmed in a statement that internal measures have been implemented to prevent a repeat of the errors in judgement. Southampton, who currently sit 13th in the Championship standings with 10 points from eight games, can now look ahead to their next fixtures, a home clash with Portsmouth on 11th October.

The manager, appointed permanently in December 2025 after a successful interim spell, led Southampton to a fourth-place finish and an FA Cup semi-final last season. His influence was key in persuading players like Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin, the club's current top scorer with seven goals according to the club's stats page, to re-sign. With the off-field distraction now resolved, the focus returns to the pitch as Southampton aim to build on a recent run of form that reads two wins, two draws and one defeat from their last five outings. The team has scored an average of 1.8 goals per game this season, but will need to be more solid at the back, having conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game.
