Bazunu spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at Portsmouth, a club that finished 10th in League One that season. Despite the team’s modest performance, the Irishman’s displays earned him the Players’ Player of the Year award and convinced Saints that he was ready for the top flight.

Bazunu is now 24 and enters the final year of his contract with Southampton. Interest has been reported from Dinamo Zagreb and Celtic, clubs that recognise his talent despite his injury history. Daniel Peretz is currently Southampton’s first-choice goalkeeper, meaning Bazunu would need a move to secure regular playing time.
The transfer, which was once hailed as a coup, has become a cautionary tale for Saints.
