Southampton and Wolves Miss Out on Will Lankshear

Southampton and Wolves are reeling after missing out on Will Lankshear, who has joined Middlesbrough in a deal worth an initial £10 million. The 21-year-old striker has already made an impressive start to life on Teesside, scoring all three of Middlesbrough's goals across their opening two competitive matches.

Lankshear joined Middlesbrough in a deal that could potentially rise to £20 million through add-ons, with Spurs also retaining a sell-on clause and buy-back option. He has been handed the responsibility of leading Boro's attack under Kim Hellberg in 2026/27 following a profligate end to their previous campaign under the Swede.

Why It Matters for Southampton

Southampton and Wolves showed interest in Lankshear before Middlesbrough, but ultimately missed out on the young striker. Lankshear's experience at Oxford and West Brom made him an obvious candidate for Championship clubs looking for a young striker with significant upside. His loan at Oxford, in particular, gave him valuable experience of English senior football.

Middlesbrough began their league campaign with a late 2-1 victory over Lincoln City, whereas Southampton fell to a 2-1 defeat against Watford, and Wolves could only draw 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers. There is obviously an enormous amount of football still to be played in the Championship this season, but Lankshear's immediate impact at The Riverside only emphasises what those clubs have potentially missed.

Recent Form

Southampton are currently 15 points behind leaders Coventry in the title race and have a recent form of 3W-2D-0L (WWDDW, most recent first). They are on a 2-game winning run and have scored 82 goals this season, conceding 56 and maintaining a +26 goal difference.

Next Fixture

Southampton's next fixture is against Bolton at home on 2026-10-17, and they will be looking to bounce back from their recent defeat against Watford. With Lankshear's impressive start to life at Middlesbrough, Southampton will be eager to make a statement in their next match.
