Southampton head into Saturday's Championship meeting with Bolton Wanderers buoyed by back-to-back wins and a formidable home record, but with a key fitness concern over midfielder Flynn Downes. The Saints have won all five of their league matches at St Mary's this season and sit seventh in the table with 16 points from 10 games.
Downes fitness update
Downes was forced off in the first half of the midweek 1-0 victory at Norwich City, a result that marked Southampton's first away win of the campaign. Manager Tonda Eckert provided an update on the player's ankle injury after the match. "He said, 'Strap me up, and I'll play on Saturday', so let's see how that goes," Eckert said. "It's the outside ligaments on the ankle. I think outside is not as bad normally." The team's next fixture after Bolton is a trip to face Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Tuesday night.
Building momentum
The win at Carrow Road, secured by Kuryu Matsuki's 54th-minute strike, followed a 1-0 home success against Portsmouth. It extends Southampton's recent form to four wins from their last five Championship outings. Eckert was pleased with the resilience shown by his squad, which had to handle several enforced substitutions during the Norwich game. "To be fair, there have been some good performances away from home when we just needed to finish better," he noted. The team's current standing is a significant recovery after starting the season on minus four points due to a previous disciplinary ruling. The manager highlighted the team's recent efficiency, pointing out they have scored a goal every 54 minutes of play over the last five matches.
The Bolton challenge
Bolton arrive in good form themselves, having won 3-1 at Wolves in their last match, setting up a potentially challenging fixture for Southampton. The Saints have had a day less to prepare than their opponents, adding another layer to the contest. Eckert acknowledged the threat posed by Bolton's attacking style and their strong start to the season. The match kicks off at 3pm on Saturday at St Mary's Stadium.
