Southampton FC are handling the early stages of the Championship season with a single defeat in their league campaign as they prepare for a key home fixture. The Saints, currently 19th in the table with four points from two wins, two draws, and one loss, face a test against fourth-placed Bristol City on September 12.

Their recent form reads DDWWL, having drawn their last two matches against Birmingham and Lincoln. The team has scored 11 goals while conceding six, giving them a positive goal difference of five. Defender Caspar Jander is currently sidelined.

Thirty-three year-old German Tonda Eckert is in his first senior head coach role. He previously worked as an opposition analyst for Germany during their Euro 2012 campaign and 2014 World Cup victory. Eckert held coaching positions at FC Koln, Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich before assisting Gerhard Struber at Barnsley and Genoa. He completed his UEFA Pro Licence in Italy.

Eckert joined Southampton as an under-21 coach last summer and was promoted to senior head coach following Russell Martin's departure. "Thirty-three year-old German Tonda Eckert is in his first senior head coach role, overseeing a remarkable climb up the table to reach the play-offs last season before 'Spygate' overshadowed the considerable strides Southampton had made," he said. His side reached the play-offs in 2025 but were removed due to that controversy.

Club captain Jack Stephens is the longest-serving player at St Mary's. The defender came through Plymouth's ranks before joining Southampton's academy in 2011, making his first-team debut against Coventry in the FA Cup a year later. He had loan spells with Swindon, Middlesbrough, and Coventry and helped the club reach the 2017 Carabao Cup final.

Stephens spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Bournemouth. "He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Bournemouth before signing a new contract at Saints the following summer and returning from injury to lead them to play-off final glory before again being sidelined," he recalled. He played every minute of the 2023-24 play-off campaign that ended with victory over Leeds at Wembley.

Defender Ryan Manning moved to the south coast at the end of his contract. He made more than 40 appearances in the promotion-winning campaign and made his Premier League debut in October 2024, aged 28.

Brazilian winger Leo Scienza arrived from Heidenheim last summer and has two goals and two assists this season. He previously played for Fanna BK, Schalke II, Magdeburg, and Ulm before helping Heidenheim secure Bundesliga promotion and survival via a relegation play-off.

Canada international Cyle Larin has been a reliable scorer, netting four times this season. He was on target for his country during the World Cup summer. Larin started his career in Canada and has played for Sigma, Orlando City, Besiktas, Zulte Waregem, Club Brugge, Valladolid, Mallorca, and Feyenoord. He has scored 14 goals in 27 outings for Southampton, with his initial loan spell turned into a permanent transfer this summer. Formed in 1885, Southampton's best league finish was second in the 1983-84 season. They were relegated from the Premier League in 2004-05 and spent seven seasons outside the top flight, including two years in League One. Promotion back arrived in 2011-12, leading to an 11-season stay in the elite division. During that time they secured Europa League qualification twice and finished as high as sixth.

Relegation at the end of the 2022-23 season was followed by an immediate return via the 2024 play-off final. They were relegated again at the end of the 2024-25 season.
