Southampton have signed young goalkeeper Xander Grieves on a two-year contract, adding the 17-year-old prospect to their academy setup. The move was confirmed this week, with the former Portsmouth and Wolves player joining to provide competition in the goalkeeping pathway.

Grieves, a Republic of Ireland Under-17 international, arrives as Southampton sit 19th in the Championship with four points from five games. Their recent form reads DDWWL, and they have scored 11 goals while conceding six. Xander Grieves is a 17-year-old shot-stopper who began his youth career at Dorking Wanderers before joining Portsmouth's academy. He represented Pompey's Under-18s as a 14-year-old, making his debut in a match against Sutton United in March 2024. He played three times at that level last season after signing early scholarship forms in October 2023. His performances earned him a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee in June 2024, but he has now joined Southampton after a successful trial period last season. He also had loan spells with Telford United and Rugby Town.

Internationally, Grieves initially earned recognition with England at Under-15 level in May 2024 but has since switched allegiance to the Republic of Ireland. He has now earned two caps for the Republic of Ireland Under-17s.

Andy Goldie, Southampton's director of group talent strategy, highlighted Grieves' impact during his trial. "After impressing on trial last season, Xander joins the Academy to provide additional competition to an already strong goalkeeping pathway," Goldie said. He also praised the youngster's professionalism and hunger, noting that Grieves has already been rewarded with some exposure to the first-team environment.
