Southampton were held to a 1-1 draw by Lincoln City in the Championship on Tuesday, with Brazilian defender Welington's spectacular strike cancelled out by a late equaliser from the hosts' record signing. Mikkel Ladefoged came off the bench to score his first goal for Lincoln six days after his £4m-plus move from Vasteras SK, denying Saints a victory that would have improved their league position.
Lincoln City started with real intent, searching for their first home win in the second tier since 1961. A clever training-ground move from kick-off gave Andrei Coubis an early shot that was blocked, and Rob Street threatened at the back post seconds later. Freddie Draper then dragged an effort wide. Southampton's first-half chances were limited to a wayward Cyle Larin header and a Leo Scienza shot that curled just wide. The deadlock was broken in spectacular fashion by Welington, who unleashed a thumping shot from 30 yards that flew past keeper George Wickens as he dived at full stretch.
Lincoln squandered several chances to equalise before the break. Ben House failed to connect with a cut-back from close range and later ballooned a header over the bar. Saints goalkeeper Daniel Peretz did well to keep a low shot from Street from finding the bottom corner. After the interval, Kuryu Matsuki was off target with an early shot for Southampton. Scienza was then desperately unlucky not to double the lead, seeing his effort hit the far post, bounce across the face of goal and strike the opposite upright.
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert told reporters the game unfolded as he expected. "It is a game that I would have expected here, you have a lot of long balls you have to deal with," he said, expressing frustration at not winning from a 1-0 lead. Lincoln City head coach Tom Shaw told reporters his side were good value for three points. "I thought there was fight in the group and some of the new players showed the spirit that we know the players from last year have got, so that was incredibly encouraging," Shaw said. He noted his team made it uncomfortable for a Southampton side that were set for promotion to the Premier League last season.
The draw leaves Southampton 19th in the Championship with 4 points from their opening five games. Their record stands at two wins, two draws and one loss, with a recent form of DDWWL. They have scored 11 goals and conceded 6, giving them a +5 goal difference. However, they now find themselves 7 points behind league leaders Swansea City in the early title race.
Attention now turns to Southampton's next Championship fixture. They host Bristol City at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday, 12 September 2026. Bristol City currently sit 4th in the table, making it a challenging encounter as Saints look to climb from the lower reaches of the division. The full schedule for the coming weeks is available on our fixtures page. Southampton will need to improve their consistency, with the squad details available for review on our squad list.
The late equaliser from Ladefoged, scoring in just his second appearance for Lincoln, means Southampton have taken just one point from their last two league outings. They face Bristol City at home in four days' time.
